These are some samples of the stationary system I’ve been working on. I like the direction its going in; the most common critique is that the fork is too rigid, and the noodley shape is too abstract. I need to make sure it conveys pasta company, not just random food company. I do like that it is geometrically sophisticated and very scalable. There aren’t any raster elements, or textures that would get out of hand at large or small sizes. In that sense, its very practical.

Over the past couple of weeks I have been focusing on 2 labels: egg fettuccine & fiesta-tri colored fettuccine. The label design I have been working with incorporates vertical lines representing pasta. At first, I started with working different widths and thicknesses representing the wide range of pasta that includes Al Dente, but for one the label of egg fettucine, is misleading. I’m still working on an effective design for the label and mixing the vertical lines while possibly being realistic as well.

I’m exploring different mark makings that could possibly represent Monique’s personality for the logo. I am also working on working with kitchen utensils such as a spoon and a pot with the Al Dente logotype.

In the early weeks of working on the Al dente project I have been focusing on drawing sketches of possible label compositions as well as playing around with writing the word “Al dente”. I am interested in exploring a typeface that is hand drawn for the logo. The exercise of generating many different strategies of writing Al dente helps to identify what could work within the context of Monique’s company.
On Wednesday, in our meeting with Franc, he discussed with us the dynamics tht letters can have when next to each other. We identified how a word can be approached and read differently depending on the tracking, kerning or use of ligatures. Franc brought up symmetry vs. asymmetry within a word as well as the importance of analyzing the negative space between letters when playing with font.
